“Books should be friendly, and as much like magnets as possible.  They should be reliable and accurate, stylish and artistic.  They should be accessible, and also surprising and provocative...  They should promote wondering.  They should be better than good."

Reach for the Stars!!

WHAT IS REACH FOR THE STARS?
and How Does it Work?

Reach for the Stars is a Pledge Based Reading Incentive Program that is run as a read-a-thon.  Students are asked to read 300 minutes in a two week period.  The students ask family and friends (Parents, Grandparents, Uncles & Aunts, etc.) for a pledge (promise) of money.  It can be $0.02 per minute or $5, $10 dollars total.

Students keep track of their reading minutes, sponsors/pledges, and also make a "Wish List" of the books they want to earn. At the end of the 2 weeks, they turn everything in.

While the program and percentages ARE flexible... typically, students will take 50% of the pledges to buy books off of their Wish List. The other 50% goes to the school to use to fill the shelves with books.

There are fundraiser options available (instead of a "Book Raiser"). The fundraiser option splits the books 50% to the kids, 25% cash to the school, and 25% books to the school.

Schools love this program because it VERY VERY easy to run and requires few, if any, volunteers... depending on how you run it. The parents love it because their children are creating a routine of reading every night. Their children are motivated to read! The students love it because they are rewarded with more books that THEY get to choose... and they will continue to read those books as well! The teachers love it because it is very easy for them as well... plus they recognize students participating have taken leaps and bounds in their reading levels as a result!
